Look at me look at me

Look at me look at me

I watched a little March Madness basketball this afternoon. Baylor got upset by Yale.

Based on a very small amount of data, Baylor seems to be a group of individuals who are more concerned about looking good and individual accomplishments than a team interested in winning.

I saw a bunch of crappy off balanced shots being forced – presumably so that the shooter could be the hero. I saw one guy in particular doing a lot of celebrating of his good plays while his team was getting spanked.

So what makes someone do the “Look at me everybody!” thing? The answer to that is insecurities.

Whenever we are doing that sort of thing, it is a sure bet that right beneath that is “I’m not enough” and we are desperately trying to cover that up.

So does this mean we should never celebrate? Absolutely not! We should wildly celebrate our successes. However, there is a huge difference between celebrations being inclusive and celebrations being exclusive.

Inclusive celebration raises everyone’s energy. Exclusive celebrations bring other people’s energy down and the celebration is often at their expense.

“Hey look at me!” is always going to be exclusive.
