Getting Schooled by the Kenai River
I’m Salmon fishing in Alaska on the Kenai River. And, man-oh-man has the river been teaching me some lessons the last couple of days.
1) Comparing does not create happiness ~ Guy from Montana is an amazing fisherman. One afternoon he had more salmon on then the other 10 people fishing combined. Of course I wanted to be catching more salmon (like Guy) and so the invitation to be frustrated was there – after all I’m in the same river as Guy, a mere 30 yards upstream. A much better option was to be grateful for what I already had. I was catching some fish (more than some of the other people), I was in Alaska with some good friends, the weather was gorgeous, and the laughter was plentiful.
2) Today, I was catching fish – almost at a Guy-like pace. And, I couldn’t land any of them. I had over 30 fish get away before I successfully landed one. So here was another opportunity to be frustrated.
What a great metaphor for business. Sometimes they (prospects, customers, team-members) get away and at the moment we get to choose: do we pitch a fit, do we stop having fun, do we stop engaging, do we throw our baseball cap down in the mud (the answer to that Q is yes), do we take a little break and then get back at it, do we just get back to fishing, do we feel gratitude for what we already have?
The only way you will catch fish is if you keep on fishing, or take a short break and get back to fishing. That’s what I did and that is what I’ll be doing tomorrow – going after the fish.
Hope you are doing the same.
Much love,
Jonathan
