There’s a group of people that I play doubles volleyball with. Partners are determined by the order in which people show up. So, we end up playing with different people all the time.
Vlad and I have a history of playing really poorly together. We have been on the wrong end of quite a few blow-outs.
After getting our rears kicked in our first game together this morning, Vlad pulled me aside for a little chat. Vlad said to me, “We are better than this! We can play better together than we have been playing.”
Vlad’s pep talk made me realize that I had lowered my expectations when playing with him and consequently wasn’t playing my best or my hardest. He woke me up. He called me to my greatness.
We proceeded to win our next three games, all of them by a comfortable margin. And, we clobbered the team that beat us in the first game.
Sometimes it is just a matter of waking ourselves up, seeing that we have either settled or gotten complacent, and then reminding ourselves that we can do better.
Much love,
