Dull Saw ~ Sharp Saw
Abraham Lincoln said something along the lines of – If I had an hour to chop down a tree, I’d spend the first 30-minutes sharpening my axe.
I was working on a landscaping project today, cutting flagstone with a wet saw. Over time, the saw started cutting slower and slower. But since it was over time, I didn’t really notice.
Then I was cutting a thicker piece and it took forever. I noticed and made up a story – “oh this piece must be denser than the others plus it is thicker – that’s why it is taking so long.” No! It was because my blade was dull.
I put on a new blade and cut through the next piece in a fraction of the time that my previous cuts had taken. The sharp saw massively increased my productivity.
And then over time, the cuts started to take longer and longer. However this time I realized that my blade was getting duller. So rather than struggling, I quit for the day. And, I won’t try to cut until I get a new blade.
So often we are a dull blade in our own lives (because we are tired, stressed, not in gratitude, efforting, pressing, we aren’t playing and recharging our own battery, etc). And, often times we don’t notice the productivity and effectiveness decline because it happens over time.
But whether we notice or not, being a dull blade massively limits our effectiveness and productivity – always!
