Plenty
Back when I was in grad school in Hawaii, the locals used the term “plenty” all the time.
For example, I had a job where some days I sat up on top of a cliff and used a telescope to view and record all the activity in Kaneohe Bay. On others days, I would be at the boat ramp and my job was to interview the fishermen when they came in.
I had many conversations that went something like this:
Me: “How many fish did you catch today?”
Fisherman: “Plenty.”
Me: “Could you be more specific?”
Fisherman: “Plenty” with indications that that was enough questions for the day from the haole (white guy).
The answer was always “plenty” regardless of how much they actually caught.
Let’s contrast “plenty” with the thought that is so prevalent in our culture “enough”. What in the heck is enough? Almost always the answer to that is more than where I am currently at.
Most of the time, the “enough” conversation puts us into scarcity mode because we decide that there isn’t enough or we didn’t do enough. This also has us see ourselves as unsuccessful or even as failures.
“Plenty” puts us into abundance mode and has us see ourselves as successful.
Try replacing “enough” with “plenty” and see what happens in your life.
