Want to hear something absolutely ridiculous?
We have zero problems with engaging in negative self-talk but find it weird, strange, and awkward to engage in positive self-talk. That is RIDICULOUS!
Every time I coach a volleyball clinic, we do a simple drill. I throw the ball at the person and her job is to pass it back to me and then regardless of the quality of the pass, proudly say out loud what she did that worked.
After going through the line twice, I ask them, “be honest, who thinks this is weird?” they pretty much all raise their hands. Then I ask them, “Even though this seems weird, is your energy up or down?” They all say, “up”.
Then I ask them, “If this was a regular volleyball drill and you made a mistake would you have any problems walking to the back of the line like Eeyore – negatively self-talking all the way?” “Poor me, poor old me. I’m no good at volleyball. I stink. I should probably quit and take up knitting.”
They admit that they would have no problem doing this and that they do it all the time.
But to do the Tigger walk and boost your energy, confidence, and capability – no that would be weird.
We seriously need to redefine what is and is not weird!
Much love,
Jonathan
