We search for evidence that supports our beliefs and viewpoints all day long. And, we ignore inconvenient evidence that conflicts with our beliefs and viewpoints.
Here’s a great example: I asked a client what was going well. She excitedly replied that she had gotten a new client earlier that day and that it was super easy. Later on in our session, she told me a story about how hard it is to get clients. Failing to conceal my laughter, I said, “Oh, you mean like earlier today.” She made the “got caught with my hand in the cookie jar” face and broke into laughter.
She had completely discounted the inconvenient evidence of what had happened earlier that day and instead embraced her tired old story about how it is hard to get clients.
We will always find evidence for what we are looking for. So, the question becomes ~ what kind of evidence are you searching for?
Want to do something really powerful for yourself? Start an “Evidence It Is Working” journal and record your evidence every day. I suspect you will be stunned by what this does for your energy, enthusiasm, optimism, and mood.
