A year ago, the boy we carpool to school with told my daughter that he did not like our Halloween decorations. Sabine was devastated. She loves our decorations.
This was a chance to talk with her about not taking things personally. That this was just his opinion. It wasn’t right or wrong, it was just his opinion. And the important thing was whether she liked our decorations.
She got it and was able to let go of being hurt.
Well, fast forward one year ~ on the way home from school Friday, I got a call from his mom. She was stuck in traffic and she asked if he could come to our house for 15 minutes.
As we were walking in the front door, he said, “Wow, I like your Halloween decorations.”
After he left, I asked Sabine if she remembered last year. She did.
This gave us an opportunity to revisit the conversation about not taking other people’s opinions personally. The fact that one year he didn’t like the decorations and a year later he liked the exact same decorations, allowed us to laugh and also to talk about how people’s opinions are just a reflection of what is going on in their head.
It is not personal!!!
Much love,
