When did boorish behavior become okay?

I’m wondering if it is a newer idea that it is okay to treat people poorly and disrespectfully simply because they have a different opinion or if social media has simply made it easier to do so and to do so on a public stage?
Either way ~ what’s up with that? Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion (see the 1st Amendment). What would happen if we started treating each other with respect instead of disdain?
What happened to the golden rule ~ do unto others as you would have them do unto you?
What happen to the parental wisdom of “if you cannot say anything nice then don’t say anything at all”?
What happened to basic consideration, respect, and courtesy? What happened to simply behaving like a good person?
Are people really thinking that more hate is the answer, that somehow more hate will make things better? (Has anyone ever hated their way to a happier life – of course not?) We cannot chase away the darkness with more darkness. Only light can dispel the darkness.
It is time to be kind to one another, to be respectful, to look to put out fires, to mend fences – not to do further damage.
We can do better than this!
