Slave Mentality
The other day a client referred to the Bible story of the Israelites wandering in the wilderness for 40 years before being able to enter the promised land. They were not allowed to enter the promised land until all those who lacked belief in God’s word and promises had died off.
These people still had a slave mentality. They didn’t believe that good was possible for them.
Isn’t this a perfect metaphor! Our slave mentality stands between us and our promised land.
Slave mentality:
- Scarcity thinking
- I’m not enough, I’m not worthy
- Waiting for the other shoe to fall
- Who am I to be successful, happy, wealthy
- Harsh self-criticism
- Belittling and discounting our accomplishments
- Low expectations, small dreams
- Doubt and disbelief, not possible
“Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds!” – Marcus Garvey
