Outwitting Our Thinking 
Sabine was sitting next to me on the roller coaster. She was about to ride for the first time. I could see, feel, and hear her starting to get anxious.
I figured that this would most likely turn out to be a scary experience for her rather than an exciting experience if we didn’t interrupt this process of anxiety.
So, as soon as the roller coaster started moving, I started laughing. I laughed on the steep drops. I laughed on the quick turns. I laughed the whole ride.
My laughter threw her brain for a loop. Her brain thought that she was supposed to be scared but instead it kept hearing loud laughter. This caused her brain to jump off the anxiety track and onto the excitement track.
We then proceeded to ride two other coasters that were far scarier than that first one. And, I laughed the whole time on those rides too.
We can do this to ourselves as well. We can cause our train of thought to jump tracks. It might look something like this: I notice that I’m feeling scared and then I say to myself, “what if I’m actually excited about this!” Or, we could literally laugh in the face of our problems. Or, . . . (there are so many ways we can outwit our thinking).
If we are on a thought track that is taking us somewhere that we do not want to go – we are going to end up there unless we outwit our thinking and jump the tracks.
