It really is about me
People often get tripped up around the idea that it is not okay to have it be about me. This can prevent people from asking for help, receiving assistance, and going for it.
And this is a bunch of garbage. It is okay to be about me. In fact, it is impossible for it to not be about me. By definition anything that I do is about me – about how I view myself and who I believe myself to be.
If someone throws a hand grenade into the room and I run and hide behind you, that is about me. If someone throws a hand grenade into the room and I dive on top of it to save you, that is also about me. In both of those cases, I am acting consistently with who I know myself to be. It is about me.
We do good things because they make us feel good about ourselves. We do good things because that behavior is consistent with who we know ourselves to be and who we want to be.
So we are caught up in exploring the wrong question – “Is it okay for it to be about me?”
The much better question is – “How do I go about having it be about me? Do I do it in a way that contributes to others or in a way that harms others?”
It is about you! And have yourself be someone who contributes, makes a difference, and makes this world a better place.
Much Love,
