But what will they think?
Because we don’t fully love, accept, and approve of ourselves exactly as we are, we worry about what other people think of us.
However, this puts us into a damned if we do and damned if we don’t position. No matter what we do or do not do, some people will like it and some people will not like it. There is no universal thing or behavior that everyone will like. We cannot please everyone.
Recently we were at an exchange student potluck and it was Momo’s (our Finnish exchange student) turn to present on Finland. Sabine and I were going to do our two person wave (I throw my arms up and yell “Mo” and then Sabine does the same thing and then we repeat.) So, they introduce Momo and I yell, “Mo!” Sabine ducks down out of sight.
Later we talked about this. She saw that the reason she did this was because she was worried about what others would think. I’m sure some of the people there thought I was a goofball. And, I also saw people laugh and smile. One guy even tried to get Sabine to participate in the wave. So as is always the case, some people liked it and some did not.
Then I asked her, “Who do you think had more fun, you are me?” She thought that I did.
So here’s my moral of the story: Be yourself, shine bright, take opportunities to play (if that is your authentic self), and have fun. Those that appreciate this are probably your people, the ones you want to spend time with. Those that don’t appreciate it probably are not your people.
Much Love,
