Are You Refueling Or Running On Empty?
Most people are not very good at acknowledging (much less celebrating) progress. When we fail to do this, we deprive ourselves of fuel – excitement, enthusiasm, self-confidence, feelings of well-being, happiness.
When we lack fuel, we feel tired and burned out. Inspired action and a positive attitude become so much harder.
There are so many opportunities in our day to refuel but how often do we actually take them? And, what would happen if we did?
Many years ago, I mountain biked the Kokopelli Trail (142 miles from Fruita, CO to Moab, UT). After lunch the second day there was a brutal (seemingly never ending) climb. By the time I got to the top, I was whooped. However, there were still a lot of miles to ride before camp that night.
I ate part of a power bar (I refueled) and immediately had a surge of energy and was ready to ride again. I repeated that pattern – tired, refuel, ride again – about every 20 minutes for the next 4 hours and was able to finish the day’s ride. Without refueling, there was no way I would have ever made it.
But here we are in life and business, seldom refueling, and then wondering why progress is so slow, and why we aren’t enjoying the ride, and why we don’t feel energetic and inspired. Duhh – it is because we are grinding along rather than refueling.
Acknowledge and celebrate your progress and your successes. This is the rocket fuel for your life!
Much love,
Jonathan
