Q: Why is your inbox filled with spam? A: Because it works. As long as it keeps working, the spammers will keep spamming.
If we want spam to go away, we need to never ever never never purchase anything from a spam email. Even if the spam triggers a latent need (by gosh I do need some of that white kidney bean extract) don’t reward the spammer – get the product from a reputable source.
Even one purchase is too many because spam is essentially a passive income stream. There’s a tiny bit of work to start it and then . . . My website was recently hacked and consequently was sending out 33,000 spam emails a minute – 1,980,000 an hour – 47,520,000 a day. So if even 1 in 10 million people purchase, this guy generates 5 passive sales a day. He will keep doing it!
But wait, there’s more. Spam hurts people.
Because of the spam, the server I use got blacklisted which means that about half the emails I’ve sent out recently don’t get delivered. (Not replying to people isn’t exactly a good business strategy.)
50 other websites go through that server so they were blacklisted too. That is 50 impacted businesses.
But wait, there’s more. The hosting company has spent a ton of their time working on this. They have lost a bunch of clients over this through no fault of their own. And it costs multiple thousands of dollars to get off of the blacklists. (You need to hire a company that specializes in this.) This spammer might end up putting the hosting company out of business. If so, he will have killed a business in order to unethically sell his wares.
Spam hurts ethical business owners. Spam is generated by people who don’t give a s%^* about people. Spammers are total me first, what’s in it for me people, not someone you would ever want to do business with.
So, please please do not ever reward a spammer with your business – not even once.
