We often have some head trash that goes something like ~ People like me don’t get rich. People like me don’t drive luxury automobiles. People like me don’t sell. People like me don’t get ahead. People like me don’t succeed in this business. Etc etc etc . . .
We use this “people like me” idea to exclude possibility.
But, what in the world does people like me mean? It is a category with no meaning, no definition, and no characteristics. Are people like me ~ late 40’s white male, born in Denver, live in Lone Tree, CU graduates, Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, sons of plumbers, St Louis Cardinals fans, fathers, graduates from Grace Lutheran grade school, jazz lovers, pickup truck drivers who no longer drive a pickup truck, volleyball players, married guys. . . What in the world does people like me mean?
If we give any sort of definition to this category of people like me, our “people like me don’t” story immediately falls apart. Are there any late 40’s white guys who are rich? Yes! Are there any CU graduates who are rich? Yes! Are there any sons of plumbers who are rich? Yes! Are there any volleyball players who are rich? Yes!
We need to reverse our exclusive “people like me don’t” stories to inclusive “people like me do” stories. People like me do get rich – everyday. People like me do drive luxury automobiles – everyday. People like me do sell – everyday. People like me do get ahead – everyday. People like me do succeed in this business – everyday. Etc etc etc.
