Unintended lessons from the theatre
Anne and I went to Sleep No More last night, a promenade theatre experience. That means we spent 3 hours walking up and down stairs and all around a 5-story venue. And, we were wearing masks the whole time.
It has been said that character and integrity can be measured by what we do when no one is watching. Well if last night is an accurate indicator, we have a lot of room for improvement in character and integrity.
The anonymity provided by the masks seemed to provide license to behave poorly. Time and again someone would step right in front of me so that he or she could have a better view. I was even nudged aside several times.
From my experience, life is always better when we take care of others. True happiness comes from being of service and contribution. The me me me program has never created true happiness.
The second lesson is “my response”. It was a great reminder that I alone am responsible for my happiness and my enjoyment. Independently of how other people are behaving I get to choose what kind of experience I’m going to have.
I quickly decided that I wasn’t in charge of the behavior of several hundred other people. Instead I decided to enjoy myself and I did.
Much Love,
Jonathan
