The safety of playing small
There’s a risk to setting big goals. There’s a risk to showing up. There’s a risk to going for it. There’s a risk to praying for miracles.
The risk is that if it does not happen we will be forced to do some introspection, we will be forced to take a look at our part in it. ~ Were my thoughts, actions, beliefs and habits congruent with what I was aiming at? If not, why not?
This can be uncomfortable. Introspection is not exactly the great American past-time.
From this perspective, playing small is much safer and more comfortable.
However, playing small is also disappointing, mediocre and oh-so-very average. If average is okay, then keep playing small. But if you want more from life, playing small is not going to get the job done.
From the perspective of being committed to playing big, the introspection that comes from things not turning out the way we want becomes an opportunity for learning and growth rather than proof of our inadequacy.
Much Love,
Jonathan
