The elephant in the
personal growth room
personal growth room
The thing that does not get spoken about in personal growth circles is that being a human is a very complicated thing. It can be hard.
There are so many non-conscious agendas and emotional hot buttons pushing and pulling us that we often end up in our own way. Frequently we end up either not doing the things we know we should be doing or we end up doing the things we know we shouldn’t be doing. This can be very frustrating and discouraging.
Here are a handful of things that can help us navigate this big challenge of personal growth.
- Have fun with the journey. Don’t take yourself so seriously. Laugh at yourself.
- Show kindness to yourself. You will make mistakes and goof up and make poor choices. It is part of being a human. So, give yourself grace and let it go. Forgive yourself for not being perfect.
- Learn to recognize your progress and then appreciate yourself for making that progress. Celebrate progress rather than beating yourself up for not having “arrived” yet. (Less of a “bad” thing is progress. E.g. I only procrastinated on that for 2 days when I used to procrastinate for 2 weeks.)
- View yourself as a puzzle or brain teaser. If I try to figure out the Rubik’s cube for 30 seconds and then throw it against the wall in anger or frustration, I’m not going to enjoy the puzzle, or my life. I am also not going to make any progress at figuring it out. If instead, I stay engaged and curious and try different things, I will make progress and will also enjoy myself and the process.
- Get outside support and coaching when you need it.
That’s how to deal with the elephant in the personal growth room.
Much Love,
Jonathan
