Take the wheel
A while back, I was at a social event with some people who just weren’t that conversationally skilled. All they did was wait for opportunities to talk about themselves and had very little curiosity about anyone else there.
I just kind of survived the event and certainly did not enjoy myself.
In retrospect, I can see how I could have made this event much more enjoyable for myself and for the other people there. I would have just needed to grab the steering wheel of the conversation and direct it.
These people were going to talk about themselves anyway. So, if I pointed them in the direction of some of their interesting stories (everyone has some interesting life experiences and stories to tell), I would have been entertained and at the same time given them the attention they wanted.
This would have made the event better for all.
I know what to do next time.
Much Love,
Jonathan
