Reverse Cherry Picking
Cherry picking ~ selectively choosing the best or most beneficial from what is available.
If I was picking cherries to make a cherry pie, I would pick the ripe ones. I would not pick the over-ripe, under-ripe, or partially eaten cherries.
Reverse cherry picking ~ selectively choosing the non-beneficial from what is available.
When it comes to our lives, experiences, beliefs, and expectations – we do far more reverse cherry picking than we do cherry picking.
We wait for the next shoe to fall rather than waiting for the next miracle to arrive.
We focus more on our failures than we do our successes.
We remember the times that something (money, relationship, career, health, etc.) wasn’t working well and expect more of the same rather than remembering the times it did work well and then expecting more of that.
We remember the slights but not the kindnesses.
We remember the disappointments but not the victories.
We remember what that person didn’t do or the thing done wrong instead of all the good things he or she did.
Anyone want a piece of pie made with the nasty cherries? Of course not!
So why are we trying to make our lives out of the nasty cherries? Instead, let’s use our ability to be selective for our benefit rather than to our detriment.
