It is Not Up to Us Whether the Fish Bite
We left the house at 4:00am this morning and arrived in Homer Alaska at 5:30pm Colorado time. So of course, I was ready to start fishing as soon as possible
Within 10 minutes, I hooked a nice salmon and got it to the beach 3 times before it got free.
But that was it. A lot more fishing but I only caught seaweed.
However, fishing can be such a great metaphor for life and business.
When it isn’t working, sometimes we just need to take a break and then get back to it later. (As soon as I hit send, I’m headed back out.) I’m not quitting, I just took a break.
Also, we are not in charge of whether the fish bite. We are also not in charge of whether the prospect buys, or our kids take our advice or . . . All we can do is give it our best effort.
And when the fish are not biting, does that ruin our day? The fish weren’t biting but there was still a lot of things to enjoy. I saw 2 sea otters float by. Across the bay are 2 glaciers. It is still light out at 10pm. I was out on a beautiful sunny day with just a t-shirt. And, I did have the thrill of early salmon action regardless of the outcome. We can easily throw all that stuff away because the fish are not biting. When we do this, we cease to enjoy life.
Much Love,
Jonathan
