I Owe I Owe so off to work I go
People often get trapped in situations because they think that they owe somebody something and therefore they are not free to move on.
“I cannot quit this job and move on to something better because I owe the company. They took a chance on me and hired me. They trained me. I owe them.”
These situations require an objective second look. Most likely you don’t owe anything. The owing only exists in our heads.
For example, the agreement between you and the employer is – you do this work and they pay you this amount of money. And that is what has been happening. You’ve done the work. They have paid you. No one owes anyone anything. The ledgers are balanced. You are free. You don’t owe them your future any more than they owe you future equity in the company.
Usually this sense of owing turns us into modern day indentured servants where we don’t have the freedom to make choices that serve us the best. We are forced to operate from obligation rather than choice.
(Note: if on the second objective look we see that we do legally or contractually owe them something then that’s a different story. But usually we don’t owe.)
Much Love,
Jonathan
