Forgiving Ourselves
Nobody wakes up in the morning and sets out to sabotage themselves, make mistakes, or make poor decisions. But all those things are part of being human. They happen whether we like it or not.
So making peace with this is very important. Even more important is having the grace to forgive ourselves.
When we don’t forgive and instead hold on to guilt and shame, we greatly increase the likelihood of doing the same thing again.
For example, let’s say that I’m eating healthy but fall off the wagon and eat some chocolate cake. Guilt or shame will have me continually thinking about the chocolate cake. If I’m continually thinking about it, how long until I eat another piece? Also guilt and shame bring our energy down and when our energy is down, it is much easier to misbehave and if I’m feeling bad enough about myself, I just might have to self-medicate with some chocolate cake.
Forgiving ourselves allows us to turn our attention away from the past and onto the present and then to take action to create our desired future.
Much Love,
