Fear of missing out
The fear of missing out is a very strong driver of behavior.
This is obvious in the world of sales – sale ends Friday, limited time offer, limited quantity, act now . . .
However, the fear of missing out is often a part of poor life choices too – making poor food choices, staying up too late, having one too many drinks, and so on. We do these things, at least in part, because we don’t want to miss out on the opportunity.
The way to shift the impact of this is to remind ourselves that the doughnut, beer, or movie on Netflix will still be there tomorrow – if we really want to have it. So, we are not missing out on anything. We can have it whenever we choose to have it. This gives us the freedom to choose not to have it right now.
Much Love,
Jonathan
