Do what you can
I was the sort team leader for about 20 new volunteers at Project CURE today. (Project CURE is the world’s biggest distributor of donated medical supplies and an amazing non-profit organization.)
Our job was to sort boxes filled with all sorts of medical supplies into 140 different bins like IV start needles, casting supplies, neurosurgery, anesthesia, and many more.
The next step is to then box these sorted supplies and put them into inventory until it is time for them to be shipped. But, boxing requires experienced people and these were all new people. So, we didn’t get any boxing done. Just a lot of sorting.
By the time we finished our shift, many of the sorting bins were completely overflowing and the sorting area looked like a mess.
I felt bad for leaving the area a mess and considered going back to the warehouse tonight and doing a bunch of boxing.
I mentioned this to a much more seasoned sort team leader. She told me that we just have to do what we can. There is always going to be more to get done.
I immediately got it. If I try and do too much, I’ll burn out. And then, I’ll be done and of no help to the organization. The next group in will just do a bunch of boxing rather than sorting.
It was time for me to go home and celebrate what we did get done. I did what I can! And I’ll be leading a group again on Friday and we will get more done.
Much Love,
Jonathan
