Do your part and that’s enough
Sabine and I were walking to the store earlier today. We walked past a guy who was watering the sidewalk in front of his brownstone (I don’t know why). I said, “Hi” and he just stared. Then I said, “thanks for not watering us” and he just gave me a strange look.
As far as I could tell, I failed in my attempt to connect with this man and to brighten his day. (Although who knows, he could be telling his family right now about the crazy guy who clearly wasn’t from around here who was overly interested in his watering project.)
I’m telling this thrilling story to illustrate a point. Whether or not I achieved my goal, I went for it. I gave it my best shot. I can look in the mirror and feel good about myself and my efforts even if I didn’t achieve the desired outcome.
Whether his day is brightened is his job, not mine. I did my job!
So often this is the case. The results are not under our control but our efforts are. We can celebrate our efforts independently of the results.
Much Love,
Jonathan
