My Truth!!!
How often have we heard (or said), “Well, this is my truth!”
Usually a more accurate statement would be, “Listen, it is pretty simple. I am right and you are wrong! And this is the end of the discussion! So, get a clue numbskull.”
This makes me think of a couple of wonderful expressions: Would you rather be right or be happy? And, a mind is like a parachute. It works best when open.
Most of the time when this phrase is used, it comes from a defensive place and a closed heart – two things that are guaranteed to not make our lives better.
Also, that word “truth” is a powerful word. People will fight to the death over “truth”. What if instead we relabeled our truths and called them “biased opinions”. Chances are we’d have more flexibility and more willingness to consider other points of view.
Here are a few of my truths that are no longer my truth. How different would my life look today if I didn’t have the flexibility to move on from these opinions?
- Santa and the Easter Bunny are real.
- I’m going to be a MD (my truth from 2nd grade through college graduation).
- Writing is not for me (4 books and 864 Daily Doses).
- I’m never going to have kids (I love my daughters more than I could have ever imagined loving anyone or anything and they bring me such great joy).
- I’m going to become a 3rd world sustainable development consultant (grad school).
What opinions (truths) are we holding on to today that are not THE TRUTH? And, what would happen if we moved on from those biased opinions?
Much Love,
Jonathan
I write these Daily Doses because I know that my content does make a difference and helps people live better lives. So, if you know someone who would benefit from today’s thoughts, please pass this on. Thanks and gratitude in advance!
