Making sense of behaviors
Strange, perplexing, annoying, dysfunctional, and sabotaging behaviors all make sense when we uncover the stories behind them.
Here are a handful of common stories behind some of these behaviors to illustrate this point:
Procrastination ~ I’m not ready. It probably won’t work. I don’t deserve to have that anyway. I’ll do it later.
Self-medicating ~ I need to relax. I need to sooth myself. I deserve a little reward. The world out there is too much.
Staying up late ~ Fear of missing out on something.
Making poor choices with food, alcohol, etc. ~ Fear of missing out.
Wasting time ~ I need a break.
Avoiding selling ~ I’ll die if they so “no”.
And so many more . . .
There’s always a story that has the behavior make sense. Once we uncover our lousy stories, we can upgrade them. When we do, the behaviors either automatically change themselves or they become much easier for us to change.
Much Love,
Jonathan
