Beware of the equal sign
We often insert equal signs into our thinking that don’t belong there. For example, one person I worked with had it that quitting smoking would automatically make her business better, her marriage stronger, and her life happier.
There’s no connection between those things and stopping smoking. But, that line of thinking adds pressure, confusion, and (oftentimes) counter intent.
Here’s another one I’ve seen quite often: Achieving that next level of success = the end of my relationship. Well now there’s counter intent.
And this one I see all the time: Hitting a goal = happiness. I’ll be happy when I reach this level. Happiness is an internal choice not something that is determined by external factors. No, when you hit that next level, you will still be you so if you are not happy now, you won’t be happy then.
Where in your life do you have some equal signs that don’t belong there?
