A chain reaction of kindness
Today I learned about Rachel Joy Scott and the organization started in her memory, rachelschallenge.org.
Rachel encouraged people to intentionally reach out to those in need. She said, “Compassion is the greatest form of love humans have to offer…I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go.”
JB, the guy who told me about Rachel’s Challenge, told me his own story of going out of his way to show compassion.
Everybody on the school bus either ignored or picked on Lee because he was “slow”. One day something inspired JB to sit down next to Lee. They started talking, told some jokes, and a friendship began.
After high school, JB didn’t see Lee again for seven years. Then they ran into each other and Lee told JB that the day he sat by him on the bus changed his life. Before that day, Lee hated going to school because he knew that his day would be full of people either picking on him or ignoring him. After that day, it was different because he had a friend.
One small act of kindness on JB ‘s part changed the trajectory of the rest of Lee’s life! That’s leverage!
Today is Valentine’s Day where we let those that are important to us know that they are important to us. Nothing wrong with that but, that’s pretty easy. What if tomorrow we let someone know that they matter, someone who currently doesn’t know that they matter to us. What if we dispense some kindness and compassion to those who could really use it.
Much Love,
Jonathan
