Negative self-talk – damaging – I cannot do this!
Positive self-talk – useful – I can do this!
Possibility self-talk – even more useful – What if I can do this!
We know that negative self-talk makes us physically weaker, less creative, less resilient, less magnetic to our good, less likely to be in action, and slows down our ability to process info. None of these are good things.
Positive self-talk often does give us a jolt of good energy and of confidence – and sometimes it is a mock sort of energy where we don’t really believe it. Even though we’ve said the words, we haven’t necessarily convinced ourselves.
Possibility self-talk has us ask ourselves questions. What if I can do this? I wonder how I can get this done? Can I nail this presentation? Why is it that people keep giving me money?
We are conditioned to answer questions. These forward focus questions lead us to ideas and strategies that will help us to achieve the desired results. They also help us to convince ourselves. We will search through our mental files to find the supporting evidence.
What if you try changing some of your positive self-talk to possibility self-talk? What do you think will happen?
