Why Make It So Complicated???

Share this:

Something weird just started happening with my email. A handful of email addresses trigger “Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender” because I’m somehow on the spamhouse zen list. (So, I get blocked while trying to email some info to another computer in my own house.)

The return emails have a link that is supposed to help me understand why this is happening. But, their supposedly helpful information is so far over my head that it might as well be written in Chinese. I don’t have a clue about what I need to do other than contact my computer guy.

Here’s my question – in what world does this seem like good customer service? I am definitely not having a great customer experience. There is surely a way that this information can be conveyed in plain English. This sort of thing happens all the time and it is not good business.

Here’s my 2nd question – how often do we do that (make things more complicated than they need to be) to ourselves and to other people?

Oftentimes the hidden driver for this is our need for approval. If it is complicated and I understand it, that will prove how smart I am and then you will approve of me. And conversely if it is easy, it doesn’t count.

What if it is okay for it to be easy? And what if we make it as easy as possible for people to work with us?
