To visualize or not to visualize . . . To visualize or not to visualize . . .
Undoubtedly you have heard of the power of visualization but do you have a daily practice of visualization?
If not, you most likely (polite for certainly) have a lousy story or limiting belief that is stopping you from visualizing.
Step one then is to do the letting go/upgrading work so that you have the freedom to visualize.
Step two is to start a daily practice of visualization.
Here are a couple of key concepts to make your visualization practice as powerful and transformative as it can possibly be.
We are emotional creatures that have access to logic not logical creatures. Emotions drive our lives. Emotions are the “language” of the non-conscious. Consequently, our visualization practice needs to be full of powerful positive emotions otherwise it won’t reach the non-conscious and therefore won’t do any good.
Visualize being the person you want to become and feeling the feelings that come with this. Dwell on those feelings. Feel the feelings you want to have. Move yourself so powerfully that you bring yourself to tears. Who do you want to be? How do you want to feel?
Oftentimes physical movement helps us to experience stronger emotion. It is okay to move, fist pump, throw your arms over your head, or whatever else gets you pumped up. We don’t have to sit there quietly.
When we visualize, we are impressing this information on our non-conscious. This serves as instructions to our non-conscious to bring this into being. Therefore, this needs to be a daily practice to reinforce this. Five minutes a day (or twice a day) of intense emotional visualization is all that is needed.
Visualize from the perspective of looking out of your own eyes rather than seeing a movie of yourself. The movie perspective disassociates us from what we are visualizing. In effect, we are saying, “that is not me, that is someone else.”
Details are not essential. Emotion is. I don’t need to visualize the steps taken just the end result and how it feels. People get bogged down by thinking they need to visualize all the details.
Symbolism works. Visualizing the annual family trip to Tahiti (as a reward) can cover a lot of ground. For this trip to happen, my business needs to be performing at a certain level, my wife and I have to be enjoying each other’s company, my business is strong enough for me to step out for 10 days, etc.
We don’t have to start with strong belief. We are visualizing things that are a stretch, that are better than we currently know ourselves to be. So, it is okay to start the process with some disbelief. However, we want to move to belief as quickly as possible. That’s where other tools like tapping, Sedona method, what if, etc. can be very helpful. Each time we visualize the belief should become stronger.
Finally, if we do have some resistance to visualizing, we either need to embrace average or push through that resistance and do it anyway because we know that it is the appropriate thing to do. Sometimes we just have to pull up our big boy/girl pants and do it anyway.
